Inbound: the customer calls

Garbage and green bin day by street address

The week the collection calendar changes, the phone rings all day. The agent finds each caller's zone from their address and tells them exactly what goes to the curb and when.

When it starts

A resident asks when garbage day is, what goes out this week, or why their bin wasn't emptied.

What the agent does

Finds the address's collection zone, reads this week's stream, books bulky pickups, logs misses.

What your team gets

Fewer counter calls on calendar weeks, and missed pickups sent to the hauler with the address.

How it works

  1. Gets the address

Civic number and street, or the rural road and fire number. It repeats it back before looking anything up.

  2. Finds the zone

Matches the address to its collection zone on the town's map, so a street that changed zones in January gets the new day.

  3. Says what goes out

Garbage every week, blue box and grey box alternating, green bin weekly in summer. Plus the bag limit and tag price you set.

  4. Explains holiday shifts

Christmas, Good Friday and Canada Day moves, read from this year's calendar, not last year's.

  5. Books bulky items

A couch or a fridge pickup on the next bulky day for that zone, with the fee and how to tag it.

  6. Logs a missed pickup

If the truck skipped them, it notes the address, the stream and the time the bin was out, and sends it to the hauler.

Example call

  1. CustomerHi, when is garbage day on my street now? The schedule changed and I'm confused.
  2. AI agentI can sort that out. What's your address?
  3. Customer48 Birchwood Crescent.
  4. AI agent48 Birchwood Crescent. You moved into Zone C in January, so your day is now Wednesday, not Monday. This Wednesday is garbage, green bin and blue box.
  5. CustomerOh, that's why it sat there. And can I put out an old mattress?
  6. AI agentMattresses go on bulky day. The next one for Zone C is Wednesday the 21st. It's a 15 dollar tag from the town office or the library. Want me to book it?
  7. CustomerYes please.
  8. AI agentBooked for the 21st. I'll text you the confirmation and a reminder the night before.

After the call: The bulky pickup is on the hauler's list for the 21st at 48 Birchwood Crescent, the resident has a confirmation text, and the call counts toward the zone-change questions the clerk tracks.

What your team gets

  • Collection days given by address, always from the current zone map
  • Bulky item pickups booked with the fee and tag details
  • Missed pickups logged with address, stream and time, sent to the hauler
  • Holiday shift questions handled the week they spike
  • A count of calls by zone after a calendar change
Set up with you: The team loads this year's collection calendar, bag limits and fees, sets up a connection to your collection zone map in ArcGIS and your waste app, such as Recollect, and sets where missed pickups are sent.

Questions

What about rural addresses without a street number?

It takes the road and fire number, or the lot and concession, and matches those to the zone.

Can it explain what goes in which bin?

Yes, from your sorting guide. Pizza boxes, plastic film and paint cans are the usual questions, and it answers them the way your waste coordinator wrote them.

What happens when the calendar changes?

You update the calendar and zone map once, and from that day every caller hears the new schedule.
